Introduction

Business activity differs considerably across sectors, both in its scale and in the characteristics of enterprises. The graphs below compare sectors in terms of the number of enterprises, employment and value added, as well as enterprise size, labour productivity and the composition of employment.

Economic activity

The number of enterprises varies considerably across sectors. The graph shows the number of active enterprises in each sector of the business economy.

The distribution of employment across sectors differs from the distribution of enterprises, reflecting differences in average enterprise size. The graph shows the number of persons employed in each sector.

Value added measures the contribution of enterprises to economic activity. The graph shows the value added generated by enterprises in each sector.

Enterprise size, productivity and employment

Average enterprise size differs substantially across sectors. The graph shows the average number of persons employed per enterprise in each sector.

Labour productivity is measured as value added per person employed. The graph compares labour productivity across sectors.

Not all persons employed are employees: they also include working proprietors and unpaid family workers. The graph shows the share of employees in total employment in each sector.
