Introduction

This section presents data on water use and the management of water resources.

Water abstraction

Fresh water can be abstracted from the surface (e.g. rivers, lakes) or from the ground. The next graph presents the evolution of total water abstraction and its breakdown into surface and ground water.

Fresh water is used by public water utilities (household consumption), agriculture, and industry. The next graph presents the breakdown of water use across these three sectors.

Water waste

The next graph presents the magnitude of sewage sludge that is produced and how it is disposed.

The next graph shows the population share that is connected to wastewater treatment.
