Introduction

Enterprise demographics describe the creation, closure and growth of enterprises and provide an indication of the dynamism of the business economy. The data below cover enterprise births and deaths, employment associated with newly created and closed enterprises, and high-growth enterprises. Additional data from ELSTAT provide information on new enterprise registrations by sector, region and legal form.

Enterprise births and deaths

The creation and closure of enterprises are important components of business dynamism. The following graphs show enterprise births and deaths and their net difference, as well as the employment associated with newly created and closed enterprises.

The creation and closure of enterprises also generate employment gains and losses. The graph shows employment in newly created enterprises, employment in enterprises that closed, and the resulting net change in employment.

High-growth enterprises

High-growth enterprises are enterprises that experience particularly rapid employment growth over a sustained period. The following graphs show the number of high-growth enterprises and the number of employees working in them.

New enterprise registrations

ELSTAT provides quarterly data on new enterprise registrations. New registrations are based on administrative records and differ from the concept of enterprise births used in business-demography statistics.

New enterprise registrations vary considerably across sectors of economic activity. The following graph shows the number of new registrations by sector.

New enterprise registrations also differ across the country. The following graph shows the number of new registrations by region.

New enterprises can take different legal forms. The following graph shows the number of new registrations by legal form.
