Introduction

This section presents data about prisons and prisoners.

Inmates in prisons

The next graph presents the evolution of the total number of inmates in prisons.

The following chart presents the number of persons held in prisons, disaggregated by legal status: pre-trial detainees and convicted prisoners. Pre-trial detainees are held in temporary detention without having been convicted, following a judicial decision that there is a risk of flight or reoffending. Convicted prisoners have been found guilty by a court and are serving a custodial sentence.

The next graph presents the decomposition of inmates according to citizenship, gender and age.
