Introduction

Tourism is one of the most important sectors of the Greek economy. This section presents information on the number of visitors to Greece, the duration and location of their stay, the receipts generated by international tourism, and the country's accommodation capacity.

The graph below presents Greece's exports and imports of travel services. Exports of travel services correspond to the expenditure of international visitors travelling to Greece, while imports of travel services correspond to the expenditure of Greek residents travelling abroad.

While tourism expenditure is spread across many industries—including transport, retail, and recreation—it is most closely associated with the accommodation and food services sector. This sector serves both international visitors and domestic customers.

The next graph presents employment in the accommodation and food services sector.

The following graph presents gross value added in the accommodation and food services sector.
